My interview for the Bigfoot issue of Albuquerque the Magazine

I recently did an interview for Albuquerque the magazine about Bigfoot. Here is what the article said.

Cody Polston has spent decades chasing New Mexico’s ghosts, so you might expect him to be a pushover for Bigfoot. The sidebar shows him as a skeptic who is still drawn to the mystery.

His main objection is the missing physical evidence. He grants that some New Mexico sightings are compelling, but he keeps coming back to what’s absent: no bones, no droppings, no body. Dinosaur remains turn up after millions of years, he points out, so he wants to know why nothing has turned up for Bigfoot. His view is that the evidence isn’t substantial enough to support the claim.

He also thinks the lack of a body has shaped the legend itself. In his telling, the UFO and interdimensional explanations are a “relatively modern” addition. As skeptics pressed the question, the theories adapted. If the creature is tied to a UFO, the body gets taken away. If it slips back into another dimension, that explains why no one finds remains. He reads this as a response to the skepticism rather than an independent clue.

The inconsistency in witness descriptions interests him too. Some people describe a nearly human face. Others describe something closer to a kitten, with eyes set close together and fur across the cheeks. Rather than just dismissing the discrepancy, Polston wonders aloud whether, if Bigfoot existed, there might be different races of them, as there are among humans, and whether that would explain the different accounts.

Finally, he offers an explanation for why Albuquerque keeps looking. He says locals have always been drawn to the macabre. Everyday life leaves little mystery, so it would be “really cool” if Bigfoot were real, and the search is people holding on to something mysterious. The pull quote at the bottom of the page is cut off in the photo, but it appears to frame the question as whether there is evidence, not whether you believe.
